Apple Cider

It’s Fall!

It’s time for sweaters and jeans and apple cider!

Do you know where the apples in your cider come from?

If you buy locally produced apple cider (from the local orchard or farmer’s market) you can bet that it comes from local apples.

If you buy the stuff from the grocery store, be a bit more wary. It can come from apples that are produced most commonly in China, but also from Brazil and up to 7 other countries.

Now we don’t have the greatest regulatory board in history, but in the U.S., we do have some guidelines that help keep us safe. Those regulations are much looser in South American and Asian countries. Regulations that affect the chemical, herbicide and pesticide use on the plants and fruits, the process that creates the juice and just plain safety standards.

Can’t buy local? Check the label, grab a bottle of Old Orchard juice or just make certain your juice is fresh and not made from concentrate. That is much more likely to make it a product of the U.S.

Happy Autum!

Or make your own from local apples! That's my hope for this year. I've got a couple recipes I've been really interested in trying this fall. And to think of how wonderful my house will smell after a day of apples simmering on the stove! It's got me smiling and wishing for fall :)
